17. Mount Horne
Giant old-growth forest followed by a varied route to mossy bluffs with excellent views of Cameron Lake, Wesley Ridge, Mt. Arrowsmith, Mt. Klitsa and the whole Alberni Valley.
12 km return
High point: 910 m
Height gain: ~725 m
Moderate / strenuous
April to November (depending on snowcover)
Start: Cathedral Grove, the starting point of this hike, is located on Highway 4 about 500 m east of Cameron Lake. Park at Cathedral Grove and enter the MacMillan Provincial Park trails on the north side of the road (right-hand side if you’re driving toward Port Alberni).
Difficulty: The trail varies considerably. Currently it is popular mostly with hiking clubs and locals, though word of its attractions is spreading quickly. The path along a dirt slope just below and above railway tracks is subject to erosion. While not dangerous, the loose dirt can be slippery without well-treaded boots. Most of the user-made trail is clear and signposted/flagged. The section along the old logging road is easy. The flagged route to the summit requires keeping alert to the route. A little scrambling is necessary at some points, but there are no exposed or dangerous drops. Some people use the trail year round, since the avalanche danger in winter is low.
